Abandoned in Death is the 54th book in the In Death series by J.D. Robb. The series follows Eve Dallas, a homicide detective in New York City, in 2062. Also featured is her husband, Roarke, a billionaire businessman, and former criminal.
Eve is called to a playground where a woman’s body is found on a bench. The woman has a note around her neck that says “Bad Mommy” and a ribbon that hides a fatal wound. However, Eve soon realizes that the woman’s appearance is out of place. Her clothes, tattoo, and piercings are all new and from a different era. Eve suspects the killer has a traumatic childhood and is acting out some revenge fantasy. Eve’s investigation leads her to discover that other young women who look like the victim have also gone missing recently. It becomes clear that there is a pattern emerging. However, Eve must race against time to find the killer’s lair to rescue the hostage and stop the madness. Also, an added push for Eve occurs because the body is located in a playground that her friend’s young daughter frequents.
Abandoned in Death is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that explores the themes of family, trauma, and justice. Robb’s writing is fast-paced and engaging, with vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue. Her characters are well-developed and complex, especially Eve and Roarke. They have a solid and supportive relationship despite their different backgrounds and personalities. However, you can see that some cases, such as this one, impact Dallas.
